Storm Sewer Design Course TM31

This course ntroduces you to the fundamental design principles used to estimate stormwater runoff and the principles used to design storm water systems. This is a highly interactive course. You will be required to do calculations and use excel design sheets to solve equations in class each day.

Course Content

  • Hydrology
  • Hydraulics
  • Storm Sewer Design Worksheet
  • Sewer layout and standards
  • Structural design of rigid conduits
  • Structural design of flexible conduits
  • Design of culverts
  • Selection of corrugated steel culverts
  • Introduction to stormwater management

Who Should Attend
Engineers and Technologists who have had exposure to stormwater drainage and design who wish to expand their understanding of methods of accommodating storm water runoff for minor and major design storm events, e.g. GIS technologists, draft persons, development design technologists, water resource and development engineers.

This is a design course. inspectors will find Sewer and Watermain Construction Inspection a more suitable course.

NOTE:

Each student must bring their own laptop with licensed version of Microsoft Excel 2007 or Excel Office 365 installed. You will be using excel each day of the course to work on equations and design sheets. Excel knowledge is important for success in this course.

Students should also bring a metric engineering scale, pens, and mechanical pencils (and computer reading glasses if required).

Prerequisites

You should have good comprehension of:

  • High school math and the use and manipulation of algebraic formulas
  • Microsoft Excel software

Recommendations

  • Review the use of Rational Method of sewer design
  • Review Manning’s and Continuity equations
  • Students should be able to create, format, and use simple spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel.
  • Familiarity with various pipe materials used and installation of municipal services would be an asset.

Evaluation Process

  • In-class activities: 10%
  • Design Assignment: 40%
  • Final Exam: 50%

Passing Grade:  60%.
