T.J. Mahony Road School - Maintenance Section

Provide participants with a basic foundation prior to attending any of the C.S. Anderson Road School courses. The T.J. Mahony Road School is a two-year course comprised of two separate semesters. Road construction and road maintenance are offered in alternate years.

Who Should Attend
Public works employees involved in road construction and/or maintenance. 

Certificate
A grade of 65% is required on each of the two Mahony sections to successfully complete the course.

Accreditation
This course is recognized by:

  • The T.J. Mahony completion certificate is one of the options for the AORS Certified Road Supervisors Certification program, contact AORS for additional details.
    Must take both construction and maintenance to obtain 10 points credit in the technical specialist exam program. 
  • These courses may be used for the technical specialist program if you complete the construction course and the maintenance course. Point Value:  10
  • The Engineering Institute of Canada awards 2 Continuing Education Units to this course. 

 

Michael Touw, T.J. Mahony School Director

Michael is currently the Public Works Manager of Operations with the County of Peterborough. Formerly, he worked as Director of Public Works with the Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands. He has over 14 years of public works experience in both public and private sector. Michael has volunteered with T.J. Mahony for four years and also serves on the OGRA Board. He has a Civil Engineering degree from Queen’s University and a Master of Public Administration from Western.

 

Joseph Reid, T.J. Mahony Vice School Director

Joe has been with the City of Belleville for over 17 years; progressively increasing responsibility throughout.  He completed diploma in Civil Engineering Technology and a post-graduate diploma in Human Resources Management. 

Joe is a Certified Engineering Technologist through OACETT, as well as a Certified Road Supervisor (Senior) with AORS.  He was one of the first group to become a Certified Municipal Manager with Accreditation from OMMI and OGRA as an Infrastructure Specialist.

Joe has 2 young boys that keep him active, and a terrific wife!

Joe is proud to be a part of the T.J. Mahony Director Team for the OGRA’s Annual Road School.

 

Andy Allison

Andy is the CAO with the Municipality of Clarington. Prior to his new positon, he was the in-house Municipal Solicitor in Clarington.  He was also the City Solicitor in Pickering, a Regional Solicitor in Durham Region, and an associate at one of Canada’s pre-eminent Bay Street law firms.  His practice is diversified.  He does nothing particularly well, but somehow manages to keep his clients out of trouble relying on his good looks, humour and humility.

 

Jason Hunt

Jason is the Director of Legal Services at the Regional Municipality of Durham. There he deals with all manner of legal and business issues impacting municipalities. Prior to joining the Region, Jason was a civil litigation lawyer in Oshawa, Ontario with a practice in motor vehicle litigation as a plaintiff’s counsel and doing insurance defence work. Jason graduated from McMaster University in 1994 with a Bachelor of Commerce and then attended University of Windsor Law School, graduating in 1999.

Jason has always been an active community member and served as vice-president and president of the Durham Region Lawyers Association for many years.  Jason is also actively involved in minor hockey as a coach and executive member with the Whitby Girls Hockey Association.

Jason lives in Brooklin with his wife, Carolyn, and their three daughters. When he has spare time he enjoys playing hockey and playing guitar.

 

Mike McLean

Mike McLean, McAsphalt Industries Limited Senior Marketing and Sales has lived in Whitby for the last 15 Years and is originally from Kirkland Lake, Ontario. He has been presenting Road Surface Construction and Road Surface Maintenance at OGRA Guelph Road School since the early 2000’s. Mike also teaches Asphalt Emulsion Technologies and Surface Treatments & Modern Chip Sealing at the MIT Scott McKay Bituminous course on top of presenting various other asphalt industry related courses throughout the province.

Mike began his paving career at the age of 8yrs old, working for his dad’s family paving company and has a deep rooted passion and experience in his field of work.

Mike is the first Ontario Asphalt Pavement Council Chairman (2017)/formerly OHMPA, is the Chairman of the OAPC Marketing Committee, a Past President of the Rotary Club of Kirkland Lake and is a 1994 Kirkland Lake Citizen of the Year Award winner.

Mike’s pride and joy however, is being the father of 3 beautiful girls and one great boy. A true outdoorsman, fishing and hunting also compliment his passion when he’s not selling and marketing asphalt or teaching others about the features, benefits and new innovations in asphalt paving and preservation techniques.

 

Les Shepherd

Les is currently the Head of Geotechnical Eastern Region with MTO. He served as the Director of Works, Planning Services & Asset Management for the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville for 16 years.  He had overall responsibility for the design, construction and maintenance of the county road system, county buildings, county forest, and GIS Planning Services. Les started his career with MTO in 1988 and moved to the municipal field in 1995 as the County Engineer for the County of Haliburton. 

Les is Chair of the Training Committee for the Municipal Engineers Association and  has a wealth of experience and knowledge.
