Horizontal Directional Drilling

Horizontal directional drilling is one of the most widely used trenchless technology for installing underground pipelines and utilities beneath highways, railways, water crossings, and environmentally sensitive areas. HDD significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared with the traditional pipeline construction techniques. Typical HDD applications include the installation of water and sewer pipelines, telecom (fibre-optic), electric transmission/distribution, and gas pipelines.

This course will provide fundamental knowledge and skills to effectively conduct the HDD construction inspector role according to project requirements and the industry’s good practices guidelines, specifications, and standards.

What You Will Learn

This course will teach you the essential steps to complete successful HDD projects. After completing this course, you will be able to:

• Develop an understanding of HDD process, equipment, downhole tools, and drilling fluids

• Carry out feasibility analysis, including surface and geotechnical assessment and subsurface utilities survey requirement

• Verify HDD plans, drawings, and site layouts to evaluate project constructability, and conformance to specifications and standards

• Develop and implement inspection and testing plan to ensure quality standards and adherence to project requirements

• Inspect construction site, identify project risks, and develop risk management and contingency plans

• Understand and implement the HDD industry’s good practices guidelines, standards, and specifications

Rizwan Younis, PhD, P.Eng.

Dr. Younis specializes in trenchless rehabilitation and replacement of underground pipelines and buried infrastructure asset management. From 2009 to 2021, Dr. Younis managed and delivered the most extensive trenchless education program at the University of Waterloo’s Centre for Advancement of Trenchless Technologies. He helped develop and deliver the Horizontal Directional Drilling Fundamentals field course with Fleming College from 2017 to 2019. He has also developed and delivered custom training programs and courses for organizations such as the City of Toronto, City of Markham, MMM Group (now WSP), and Enbridge Gas Inc. Before joining academia, Dr. Younis worked as a design and construction engineer on large-scale civil infrastructure projects in the roads and water resources development sectors. Dr. Younis graduated with a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering and a BMath Honours (Systems Management), both from the University of Waterloo, and a B.Sc. Civil Engineering from University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, Pakistan.

Fraser MacNeill

Fraser has over 12 years of experience in the horizontal directional drilling field. He is thoroughly knowledgeable about HDD drilling rigs, downhole tools, tracking, drilling fluids, feasibility and risk analysis, and QA/QC. Currently, he works for LDL Directional Drilling and Tunnelling Services and is a consultant and instructor at the Trenchless Institute. Previously, Fraser served as corporate product manager for Ditch Witch Eastern Canada Division (Brandt Group of Companies). Fraser possesses a Resources Drilling and Blasting Diploma from Fleming College.
