Asset Data Collection and Condition Evaluation Online

Effective management of public assets relies on instant access to detailed information about their history, location and current condition.  This course investigates the data that is required by asset type, various methods for collecting and organizing data into logical categories, and maintaining the data over the life of an asset.  Methods for determining the condition of several asset types and assigning a rating will also be covered.

Dr. Hassan Baaj is an Associate Professor at the University of Waterloo. He is the Norman W. McLeod Professor in Pavement Materials and the Associate Director of the Centre for Pavement and Transportation Technology. Dr. Baaj has about 20 years of experience in pavement materials and design in Europe and North America both in the private sector and academia. He is Professional Engineer in Quebec and Ontario and member of several scientific and technical organizations.

Hassan Baaj obtained his PhD from the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées in Lyon, France. He was then awarded with a postdoctoral fellowship at the Institute for Research in Construction at the National Research Council in Canada where he worked for a year. Hassan then joined the road construction industry in 2003 with Sintra in Québec (Colas Canada). During the next five years, he had the opportunity to lead and participate in several innovative projects in the roads industry and was in charge of several collaborations with the Ministry of Transportation Québec, municipalities, and a number of universities in Canada and abroad. In 2008, he joined Lafarge in France and took over the responsibility of the Research and Development (R&D) activities of the company in the area of roads at the Lafarge Research Center (LCR).

He is interested in research topics related to sustainable pavement materials, self-healing materials, constitutive modelling of the behavior of construction materials, Life-Cycle Analysis and mechanistic pavement design.

 

Dr. Susan Tighe, P.Eng, is a Professor and the Norman W. McLeod Professor in Sustainable Pavement Engineering at the University of Waterloo. She is also a principal member and the Director of the Centre for Pavement and Transportation Technology (CPATT).  Dr. Tighe is very active professionally in Canada and internationally and has over 300 technical publications to her credit. She has over twenty years of experience and is a licensed professional engineer in the province of Ontario. Her accomplishments have been recognized by various awards, including member of the New College of Scholars Royal Society of Canada, Canada's Top 40 Under 40 and the Professional Engineers of Ontario’s Research and Development Award in 2016.

She is currently President Elect of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering and has been involved in various national and international technical committees over the past twenty years.  Dr. Tighe has also worked for the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, for Pioneer Road Services in Australia, held various fellowships including: an Erskine Fellowship at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, a United Kingdom Royal Academy of Engineering Fellowship at the University of Nottingham, in England and Visiting Professor Fellowship at the University of the Sunshine Coast in Australia. She is a recognized national and international expert in Pavement Design and Management and she was the principal investigator on the 2013 Transportation Association of Canada’s Pavement Asset Design and Management Guide.
