Course Description

Throughout this course, we will break down the basics of road construction. equip you with the knowledge needed to understand how we design roads to withstand the challenges of our unique climate.

We will also dive into the world of contracts and legal responsibilities in road projects. Understanding how to manage these aspects of road construction is crucial for successful projects. By the end of the course, you will have built a baseline skill set to help you navigate the different components of road infrastructure projects.

 

Course Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Explain the fundamental components of flexible pavements for design and application.

  2. Describe the foundational construction material techniques and properties to place, finish, and cure concrete across applicable applications.

  3. Describe the concepts of design criteria in construction, preparation practices, and materials used for urban and rural road design in Ontario’s climate environment.

  4. Describe utility maintenance for roads and sidewalks when dealing with new installations and relocations.

  5. Describe proper contract management techniques and basic legal responsibilities around roads, occupational health and safety and the environment.

Online Course Schedule

This self-paced online course offers flexibility, allowing you to progress through each module at your own pace. With 24/7 access, you can tailor your learning schedule to suit your preferences and location.

This course will take between 30-35 hours to complete. The course content will be available to you from May 8th to August 31st, 2024, providing ample time for comprehensive learning and review.

 

Online Course Structure

This online course features a structured format comprising lesson content delivered through text and instructional videos, complemented by interactive activities and a downloadable PDF copy of a student workbook. While there is no real-time interaction with an instructor, participants have the option to reach out via email for any questions or clarifications.

Enrollment emails will be released at the start of the semester on May 8th, 2024. For those registering after this date, enrollment emails will be sent within 48 hours. Participants are advised to check their junk mail folder if the email does not appear in their inbox.

 

Online Course Location

Online courses take place on the Good Roads education website hosted through D2L Brightspace.

If you have never taken a Good Roads online course. you will be sent a username and link to set your password. This will not be the same username and password that you use on the main Good Roads website.

 

Who Should Attend

Public works employees involved in road construction and/or maintenance.

 

Accreditation

  • The T.J. Mahony completion certificate is one of the options for the AORS Certified Road Supervisors Certification program, contact AORS for additional details.
  • Must take both construction and maintenance to obtain 10 points credit in the technical specialist program.
  • The Engineering Institute of Canada awards 2 Continuing Education Units to this course
