2025 Road Safety School - Barriers Course

Join Ontario's Premier Road Safety Education Event

This comprehensive 4-day program begins with a full-day Safe System Principles conference attended by all participants, followed by three intensive days of barrier design and implementation training. Learn how properly designed and installed barriers are a critical element of the Safe System approach—managing crash energy to protect road users when other safety measures aren't enough.

Save lives. Protect communities. Master the skills that matter.

Road safety barriers are lifesaving infrastructure—but only when they're designed, installed, and maintained correctly. This comprehensive training gives you the knowledge and confidence to excel at barrier management while making Ontario's roads safer for everyone.

Course Description

Day 1: Safe System Principles Conference (All Participants) Understand how road safety barriers fit within the Safe System hierarchy and their role in managing kinetic energy to protect road users during crashes.

Days 2-4: Road Safety Barriers Training Every year, run-off-road and head-on collisions claim lives that could be saved with properly implemented barrier systems. As infrastructure demands grow and safety standards evolve, municipalities require skilled professionals who understand both the technical requirements and the real-world challenges of implementing barriers.

Course Content

  • Barrier Performance and Selection: Understanding how different barrier types perform under various impact conditions. You'll learn to match barrier systems to specific roadway conditions, traffic patterns, and risk profiles
  • Canadian Standards and Regulations: Navigate the regulatory landscape, including Transport Canada guidelines, provincial requirements, and municipal standards. Stay current with evolving safety criteria and testing protocols
  • Installation Excellence: Master the critical details that separate successful installations from costly failures. Learn from case studies of what works—and what doesn't—in Ontario's challenging climate conditions
  • Maintenance for Longevity: Develop maintenance programs that extend barrier life while ensuring continued protection. Understand inspection protocols, repair criteria, and replacement planning
  • Real-World Problem Solving: Work through scenarios municipal engineers face daily. From budget constraints to challenging terrain, you'll gain practical solutions for common barriers and challenges
